There is this place downtown that I absolutely adore. It's this place called "cafe crepe" and it is just great. They make sweet and savory crepes, and it is all amazing.

Even though one time I went there, the service sucked a little. (I'm being very nice about it actually. It sucked big time)

So we get a seat, all is good. They don't come to our table for 20 minutes, which is okay, since I was catching up with a friend I haven't seen in some time. When they finally came, we just ordered our drinks and food at the same time, since we didn't know how long they would be to come back again for our food order. 15 minutes pass, and the waitress comes back saying "sorry, we lost your order, can you please tell us what you wanted again?" Since we are the most patient and respectable customers on the planet, we smile and give our orders again, even though we are starving!

15 minutes later, they give us our drinks. Don't get me wrong, the drinks were awesome: Nutella milkshake. Do I need to say more? I will recreate it one day... Then 20 minutes later, our food finally gets to us. Sadly, we have no drink with our meal (20 minutes is a long time to nurse a delicious Nutella milkshake) but it still tasted great.

This just goes to show to what extent I LOVE crepes. I will wait patiently for over an hour to get some. But, I have never actually made them at home.

But making these Nutella Banana Crepes at home changed it all for me! If I knew how easy it was to make homemade crepes, I would have been making them a long time ago!

Nutella Banana Crepes Ingredients

You just need a couple of pantry essentials to make this simple recipe for sweet crepes. All you need is:

  • all purpose flour
  • large egg
  • milk
  • oil
  • salt
  • Nutella (or any hazelnut spread)
  • ripe banana slices

Tips

Use a crepe pan if you have one. When I worked at a coffee shop, we had a crepe maker which was even better, but for the home kitchen a crêpe pan works best. Because the side of the crepe pan is shorter, it makes the crepes easier to flip. The heavy bottom also helps the crepe batter to cook evenly throughout the entire pan. If you don't have one, a nonstick pan works well in its place.

Storage: To store cooked crepes, place the cooled crepes on a large plate, cover with plastic wrap and store in the fridge for up to 2 days. If you have an airtight container that is big enough, you can also store them in there.

Let the crepe batter rest. This allows the gluten to relax, and results in softer, more delicate crepes. You can do this for 5-10 minutes, or make the batter the night before so that it's ready to make first thing the next morning.

Change up the presentation. My favorite way of presenting these crepes is by folding it in thirds as shown by the pictures, but in a classic crepe shop you will see them in a triangle shape. This results in less space to stuff the crepes with filling, but it is all a personal preference.

Variations

Change up the fresh fruit. This crepe recipe is for banana lovers, but if you aren't a fan, switch out the slices of banana for seasonal fruit. I personally love strawberries, but any fruit works!

Add some flavors to the batter. This makes a basic crepe recipe, but if you wanted to make them more unique try adding some matcha or cocoa powder.

Make these crepes into a delicious dessert. If you wanted to make this into a decadent dessert, try topping these crepes with whipped cream, powdered sugar, chocolate chips or ice cream!

Thank you for this recipe - what a delightful idea this was! Love the combo of banana and chocolate

  3. The word crêpe is coming from the Latin crispa, which means “curled”, and refers to a type of really thin pancake. Crêpes are usually cooked with wheat flour. It is completely flat and usually have a filling or spread. In addition, crêpes are entirely unleavened, while standard pancakes do have a leavener of some kind. Although, in terms of origin, one could argue that they are just the French way of reproducing the German pancake
