Chocolate Orange Cake with Orange Frosting

It's my birthday in 3 days! And it's going to be one of those milestone birthdays. I'm turning 30. Where did the time go?

People always tell me that as soon as I hit 30, my metabolism won't work as well. Which means I guess I need to eat as much cake before then as I can.

Starting with this Chocolate Orange Cake with Orange Frosting!

I basically grew up on the Orange and Chocolate flavor combo. Every year, my parents would get the kids a Terry's chocolate orange for Christmas. And when we opened any box of mixed chocolates, the chocolate and orange ones would be the first to go. But as I grew up, I noticed that not many people I knew liked the combination of chocolate and orange. Maybe it's a British thing, but honestly I'm shocked!

But I promise you, even if you typically don't like the orange and chocolate flavor, you might like this cake. The flavors are very subtle, but the cake is extremely moist and fudgy. If you wanted to elevate this cake even more, I suggest topping them with Dried Orange Slices. Not only are they beautiful, they aren't hard to make!

So happy birthday to me! I better get started and eat the remainder of this cake before I turn 30.

Tips & Tricks

For best results when frosting this Chocolate Orange Cake with Orange Frosting: always make sure that you let the cake cool on a cooling rack before applying frosting to the sides of the cake. It is also good to apply a crumb coat, before spreading the remaining buttercream frosting on top in an even layer.  It is also a lot easier to get at the edges of the cake when you are spreading the frosting over the cake using an offset spatula.

To store this cake: if you have a cake cover or a large mixing bowl, those work very well to cover the cake to store at room temperature. If you don't have a large bowl big enough, you can also lightly cover the cake with plastic wrap or parchment paper. To make sure the protective layers do not ruin the top of the cake, place some toothpicks in the cake to give some space between the layers. If you don't need to store the whole cake, you can cut the cake into slices and store in a big enough airtight container.

  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 6 cups powdered sugar
  • ½ cup freshly squeezed orange juice

I use avocado oil, but any neutral oil works well.

I love the richness of the cake with the balance of the bright citrus that the orange adds. I'm putting this frosting on some cookies, too! So good!
