I was first introduced to magic shell at Dairy Queen. That, to me, was the original magic shell. I found it fascinating that you could pour melted chocolate on top of a scoop of ice cream and that it would harden. A couple years later I saw containers of magic shell at the grocery store and knew I had to buy some. Since that day, I have always had magic shell on hand in my pantry.

Then when I started this food blog, I was on a mission to make a homemade version. Ever since then, I have made countless variations of magic shell. But this Nutella version is definitely one of my favorites.

This Nutella Magic Shell works so well on any ice cream flavor. My favorite is topping either vanilla ice cream or strawberry ice cream. But whatever ice cream you want to top with this magic shell, I am sure that it will be a huge hit with your whole family.

What is a magic shell?

It is one of the easiest ice cream toppings you can make. Don't get it mixed up with chocolate sauce. A magic shell is basically liquid chocolate that once you pour it on top of ice cream, it hardens. The hard chocolate shell is perfect to top ice cream cones, ice cream sundaes, or really just any ice cream desserts. You just need to make sure you have really cold ice cream to make the magic shell work.

Nutella Magic Shell Ingredients

This homemade magic shell recipe is just made with 2 simple ingredients. All you need is:

  • Nutella
  • coconut oil

Tips

Storage: Make sure to store your magic shell in a microwave safe airtight container. I prefer to use a mason jar as the sealed container just because you can easily microwave it and pour it on top of your ice cream. I wouldn't recommend a plastic bottle because the chocolate mixture will harden and you may not want to microwave the plastic to melt the chocolate.

Can you substitute the coconut oil? Unfortunately, the coconut oil is the secret ingredient that allows the chocolate to form a hard shell. You can however replace it with cocoa butter, but that may be harder to come by.

What coconut oil to use? There are two main types of coconut oil: unrefined and refined coconut oil. If you want a more coconut taste, use the unrefined coconut oil. However if you want the Nutella flavor to shine, make sure to use refined coconut oil.
