This weekend, I needed some chocolate sauce. I had an ice cream dessert that really needed some chocolate on top, and so I made this Homemade Chocolate Sauce.

The only issue was that any time I searched for an inspiration recipe for chocolate sauce, the recipes all had heavy cream in it. And since I don't usually have heavy cream on hand, I knew that I needed to make a chocolate sauce recipe without it.

This recipe is perfect. It even works if you are vegan! Made with no cream, chocolate chips or other dairy ingredients, it is so easy to make. Gone are the days where I would buy store-bought chocolate sauce. My house is always going to be stocked with this homemade version!

Homemade Chocolate Sauce Ingredients

This easy chocolate sauce recipe is just made with 5 simple ingredients. All you need is:

  • unsweetened cocoa powder
  • white sugar
  • pinch of salt
  • cold water
  • vanilla extract

Tips

Storage: store this quick chocolate sauce in a mason jar, or any glass jar that is resealable. This way you can heat it up to a pourable texture if it gets too hard or becomes more of a sticky sauce, and drizzle it on top of your favorite dessert. I would not recommend storing at room temperature since it could spoil. It is best stored in the fridge for a couple of weeks.

What to put this chocolate sauce on? You can add chocolate drizzle on top of banana splits, ice cream sundaes, a slice of pound cake.. really the possibilities are endless! You can even mix it with milk to make chocolate milk, or top your favorite coffee drink with it.

Type of chocolate cocoa powder to use? I would recommend Dutch process cocoa powder for more of a richer and darker chocolate taste to the sauce, but if you only have natural cocoa powder that would work as well.

Switch out the sweetener. You can replace the sugar with either corn syrup, pure maple syrup or glucose syrup. If do a taste test and realize that you want a sweeter version, just add extra sweetener until you reach your desired taste.
