I have been living off of cold drinks lately.

It is the end of August, and I am still sweating it out in my house. Since I really don't want to leave my house to drive 30 minutes to get some bubble tea, I decided to start making this homemade matcha bubble tea recipe on repeat.

Just for context, I am a huge matcha lover. If you looked in my pantry, I have an entire shelf dedicated to vibrant green matcha powder. My husband isn't really a matcha fan, but he will have some if I make it for him. And ever since I made this Iced Matcha Bubble Tea for him, he is asking for it all the time. It is such a refreshing drink, I think that I am going to be making it all year round. Even non matcha lovers will start craving this homemade matcha milk tea.

Tips

Use a good quality matcha powder. Because matcha is the star of this recipe, you want to opt for a higher quality matcha tea. I would suggest that you look for ceremonial grade culinary matcha. Culinary grade matcha powder will give you the vibrant green color that you look for in a matcha drink.

What boba tapioca pearls to use: I love these instant tapioca pearls. They are ready in 5 minutes, and are the best chewy tapioca pearls that I have tried so far. You can follow the package instructions, or use my recipe for Instant Pot Tapioca Pearls.

Variations

Make it vegan. To make it vegan, just choose a plant-based milk. Some of my favorite non-dairy milk to use in this recipe are: oat milk or coconut milk. You can use almond milk or soy milk, but I have found that it makes this matcha boba tea taste more watered down.

Use a different kind of tea. You can replace the matcha tea with black tea for a more classic milk tea recipe.
