Caramel Sauce

Easy Caramel Sauce recipe. Made with only 5 ingredients, this sweet sauce tastes great in drinks or as a topping for ice cream.

Caramel Sauce

Does anyone else associate caramel and Christmas? Because in my mind, the two go hand in hand.

So making homemade Caramel Sauce is a no brainer at this time of year, don't you think?

Caramel Sauce

I actually used this Caramel Sauce in my Salted Caramel Oatmeal recipe I posted last week.

And I have been topping basically everything else I have been eating with this sauce ever since. Because you can never have too much caramel, am I right??

Caramel Sauce

What do you need to make this Caramel Sauce?

If I knew it was so easy to make caramel sauce at home, I would have been making it monthly for years! All you need is:

  • white sugar
  • butter
  • heavy cream
  • vanilla extract

Yes. That is really it!

Caramel Sauce

This would actually make really great gifts for the holidays. Put them in tiny mason jars with ice cream toppings and call it a sundae kit? I would love that as a gift!

Or you can just keep it to yourself. I know that this sauce doesn't last long at my house!

Course: Dessert
Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 1 minute
Cook Time: 14 minutes
Total Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup water
  • 6 tablespoon unsalted butter, cut into pieces
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan, mix together the sugar and the water. Cook on the stove over medium heat until the bubbles start to form, around 3-4 minutes. Do not stir. Swirl the saucepan occasionally and brush down the sides of the pan to prevent crystallization.
  • Continue swirling until the mixture thickens and turns a deep amber colour like honey, around 8-12 minutes.
  • Whisk in the butter until fully combined.
  • Remove from heat and slowly mix in the heavy cream, whisking until fully incorporated.
  • Mix in the vanilla and allow to cool in the saucepan for around 10 minutes.
  • Pour into a mason jar and allow to cool completely. The mixture should thicken more as it cools.

Notes

  1. Store the caramel sauce in a sealed mason jar in the fridge for 2-3 weeks. When ready to use, microwave what you want to soften it.

  10. I mean, I guess caramel sauce is kind of a Christmas-y thing, especially when served with toffee pudding. However I like mine throughout the winter months. Gotta have something delicious to look forward to all winter long.
