Or cold, depending on how you think about it. Almost every time I have ice cream, I need to make a magic shell. It's just too good to pass up. So when I noticed that I had a lot of hazelnuts at home, I knew that I needed to do something with them. And since I just made ice cream, this Hazelnut Magic Shell was bound to happen.

What is a Magic Shell?

If you don't know what a magic shell is, you are missing out! If you have ever had one of those dipped cones from Dairy Queen, you will know what I'm talking about. It's basically a chocolate coating that hardens instantly when it touches something cold. So on ice cream, it gives you a nice sweet crunch when you bite into it. Or if you have it in a bowl, you can very satisfyingly break the chocolate layer with your spoon.

How to store your Magic Shell

If you don't use all of it at once, I usually store it in a sealed mason jar at room temperature. Then when you are ready to use it, remove the lid and microwave the magic shell for 30 seconds. It should be mostly melted, but if it isn't microwave for an additional 5-10 seconds and mix until smooth.

Magic shell is surprisingly easy. For this recipe, you only need 4 ingredients. All you need is:

  • chocolate chips
  • coconut oil
  • hazelnut extract
  • chopped hazelnuts

Ingredients

  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • cup coconut oil
  • ½ teaspoon hazelnut extract
  • chopped hazelnuts

Instructions

  • Combine the chocolate chips and coconut oil in a microwave safe bowl. Microwave in 30 second intervals, mixing after each interval until smooth.
  • Drizzle your desired amount on top of ice cream. Top with chopped hazelnuts.

Notes

Store in a mason jar at room temperature so that it is easy to heat up if it hardens.
