I have reached my breaking point. The point where I just stop caring anymore. I have an exam tomorrow morning, and I am up in the kitchen instead of studying. Why? Well because there is no way I can learn anything else. I am done. My brain is full. Remind me to never take a graduate course again while still an undergraduate.

I did a graduate course last year, and it was a lot of fun, but this one... I even went as far as saying I hate math. Don't worry, I took it back, but I might feel the same way tomorrow after my exam..

Hamburger Buns

So this is what happens when I find some pre-made hamburger patties in my freezer, but I don't have any hamburger buns. Go to a store and buy a 12-pack for the dirt cheap price of $2 you say? Not me, sir. I need to get my anger out by punching at some dough, and plus, what tastes better than homemade bread?

Hamburger Buns

I tried my hand at making white bread before, but since I didn't have bread flour at home I made these Hamburger Buns. And I have got to say, they may be my new favourite thing.

Who would have thought that making your own buns would be so easy, and require so few ingredients?

Also, you can keep this recipe in your back pocket if, for some reason, all of the grocery stores run out of bread.

I am just saying. It could happen.

Prep Time: 1 hour 25 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 1 hour 40 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoon salted butter
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoon salt
  • 5 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ teaspoon active dry yeast

Instructions

  • Combine the milk, water, butter and sugar in a saucepan. Bring to a boil then remove from heat and let stand until lukewarm.
  • In a large bowl, stir together the flour and yeast. Pour in the wet ingredients until the dough starts to stick together. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl and turn to coat. Cover and let stand until doubled in size, around 1 hour.
  • Punch down dough and divide into 12 portions. Make tight balls by pulling the dough tightly around and pinching it at the bottom. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • After the rolls sit for a minute, flatten each ball with the palm of your hand until it is 3-4 inches wide. Set rolls on baking sheet and set aside to double in size, about 20 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 400˚F. Position 2 oven racks so they are not too close to the top or bottom.
  • Place one baking sheet on the top rack, and one on the bottom rack, and bake for 10 minutes in the preheated oven. Remove from oven, and return each baking sheet to a different rack. Continue to bake for another 5-10 minutes, or until nicely browned on the top and bottom.

Hi Cathleen! Thanks for the great recipe! Do you think I can use Gluten-free all-purpose flour for this recipe and get the same results?
