Healthy Matcha Green Tea Frappuccino

Does anyone else spend a good portion of their money at Starbucks?

I don't know why I keep going back almost every day. I have recreated so many Starbucks recipes on this site, from their Oat and Fudge Bars to their Honey Green Tea Lemonade. It must be the convenience.

But this weekend, I am way too cold to leave the house. I am staying inside. And making this Healthy Matcha Green Tea Frappuccino.

I don't know why matcha drinks are so expensive in coffee shops. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that matcha powder itself is so expensive. The good quality stuff at least. But even if you buy a good quality matcha powder, making this homemade frappuccino is a fraction of the cost of a Starbucks matcha frappuccino.

When I have the Starbucks green tea frappuccino, I somehow always end up feeling very gross. I'm not sure why I always come back. Probably because as I am drinking it I enjoy it. But after... it feels like my mouth is coated in oil and I feel bloated for the rest of the day.

With this healthier version? I feel more energized and ready to tackle anything the day brings. Definitely an improvement from the Starbucks version's if you ask me.

Another reason to make this homemade version of a green tea frappe is that it is so so easy to make. All you need is:

  • 9 ice cubes
  • 1 cup of whole milk
  • ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 2 Tablespoons of honey
  • 1 Tablespoon ceremonial grade matcha
  • whipped cream (optional)

That's it!!

Tips

Pay attention to the type of green tea that you use. The green tea powder is really what makes this recipe shine, so make sure that you get the real thing. There are many different kinds of matcha powder that you can buy at grocery stores, but try to go for a ceremonial grade matcha.

Make sure you use a high speed blender. To me, there is nothing worse than trying to suck up a large chunk of ice through your straw. It ruins the experience. Unfortunately, a handheld milk frother wont cut it to make this drink.

Variations

Make this green drink vegan. Switch the milk out for a non-dairy milk. My favorite plant-based milk to add to this drink is either oat milk or coconut milk. Almond milk is okay, but it makes the drink a lot more watery. The swap the honey for maple syrup, agave nectar or simple syrup.

Add in some flavor. Instead of the honey, try substituting a vanilla syrup or a classic syrup of your choice. It is a delicious way to switch this already great drink up a little bit.
