Plain Pancakes

These soft Plain Pancakes makes the perfect breakfast on busy mornings. Better than pancake mix, this is the best pancake recipe I have tried.

If you are looking for the perfect pancakes, look no further. I have tested out a lot of recipes, and this one makes the best fluffy pancakes every time. With a drizzle of maple syrup on top, this makes such a good brunch recipe.

Me and my dad have been on a search the perfect pancake recipe for some time now. Most of the recipes we have found use buttermilk, and I just never want to buy buttermilk specifically to make pancakes. Although, my dad loves drinking buttermilk straight out of a glass. I can't say that that is something that I am interested in doing.

But once we learned how to sour our own milk, it was a game changer for pancake recipes. It gives the pancakes such a light and fluffy texture, you don't even need any mix-ins! These Plain Pancakes are perfect just the way they are.

Plain Pancakes Ingredients

This homemade pancake recipe uses a couple of basic ingredients. All you need is:

  • milk
  • white vinegar (or lemon juice)
  • all purpose flour
  • white sugar
  • baking soda
  • baking powder
  • pinch of salt
  • large egg
  • melted butter

Tips

Storage: Store any leftover pancakes in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week. 

Make toaster pancakes. My favorite thing to to with leftover pancakes is to freeze them so that you can have toaster pancakes. Instead of throwing away your leftover pancake batter, cook up the remaining pancakes, then place in a single layer on a wire rack to cool. Once cooled, place the pancakes in freezer bag. Store in the freezer for up to 3 months. When you are ready to eat them, place the frozen pancake in the toaster and toast until warm.

Add in your favorite mix-ins. This easy pancake recipe makes a great base for mix-ins. I love adding in some fresh fruit or chocolate chips, but you can make a multitude of flavors using what you have on hand!

Plain Pancakes

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup milk
  • 2 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoon salted butter melted

Instructions

  • In a medium bowl, combine the milk and the vinegar, and let stand for at least 5 minutes to "sour"
  • In a separate bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a large mixing bowl. Whisk egg and butter into the “soured” milk. Pour the flour mixture into the wet ingredients, and whisk it together until the batter is smooth.
  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat and spray with cooking spray. Scoop ¼ cup of batter for each pancake, and flip when bubbles are covering the surface of the pancake. Flip and cook the other side until it is golden.

  1. Plain pancakes are the way to go - you have endless options for toppings! My favorite? Blueberries and powdered sugar...yummy. Thanks for dropping by my blog, I'm enjoying reading yours.

  2. Sometimes going back to the basic traditional kind of pancakes is the best. It's the same with cookies - I make fancy schmancy ones but in the end, nothing beats chocolate chip cookies.

    I haven't made traditional pancakes in a while so I will definitely be trying out your go-to pancake recipe.

  3. i never buy buttermilk, but i use it at work--sometimes it does make a difference, but not with pancakes. i like your simple, straightforward recipe!
