Cheers to the weekend! I am not really an alcohol drinker. Never have been, but during this pandemic it seems like my alcohol consumption (and probably everyone else's) has gone up significantly. Between my Sugar Free Vodka Lemonade and my Meyer Lemon Mojito, I have been having my fair share of alcoholic drinks.
Taking a break this week with some homemade milk tea since all the bubble tea shops around me are closed. And with this Chocolate Bubble Tea I'm not missing the alcohol at all.
One of the silver linings to this pandemic is that I started making bubble tea at home. And ever since I made my Instant Pot Tapioca Pearls, I have been making bubble tea almost every week.
You can make this homemade chocolate milk tea recipe either warm or hot, depending on your mood. But you can bet that I'm going to be making this on repeat for the next couple of days. I am in desperate need of comfort drinks after the week we've had!!
Key Ingredients

- Hot chocolate mix: Can use any flavor of hot chocolate mix. Do NOT use cocoa powder.
- Plenty of ice cubes: You can adjust this to your liking, based on how slushie you want this drink.
- Whole milk: This adds to the creaminess of the drink. If you wanted a less creamy version, you can use a lower fat milk, or even water.
- Black tapioca pearls: Make sure they are cooked and cooled! My Easy Instant Pot Tapioca Pearls recipe is what I use to make them.
How To Make Chocolate Bubble Tea

Step 1: In a blender, blend the hot chocolate mix, ice and milk until smooth.

Step 2: Place the cooked pearls in a glass or mason jar. Pour the chocolate drink on top and enjoy!

Chocolate Bubble Tea Expert Tips
How to make the chewy boba pearls. I use these Tapioca Pearls. One way to cook tapioca pearls is to bring a small pot of water to boil then cook the pearls until they float. Then remove the pearls from the hot water and place them in some simple syrup to give them some sweetness. Or you could use my recipe for Instant Pot Tapioca Pearls. You could also make fresh boba, but that will take quite a while.
Make it vegan. All you need to do is use plant-based milk in this recipe. I love using creamy oat milk, coconut milk, almond milk or soy milk.
Don't have hot cocoa mix? Replace it with unsweetened cocoa powder and some sweetener such as coconut sugar, chocolate syrup or maple syrup.
Serve immediately. Tapioca pearls harden as they cool in cold drinks, so it is best to consume the drink right away for the chewiest tapioca texture!
Want it warm? Skip the ice, and heat up the milk. Mix in the hot chocolate mix and pour over pearls.

Chocolate Bubble Tea Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoon hot chocolate mix
- 7 ice cubes
- ½ cup milk of choice
- ¼ cup cooked pearls
Instructions
- Combine the hot chocolate mix, ice and milk in a blender. Blend until smooth.
- Place the cooked pearls in a tall glass. Pour the blended mixture on top and enjoy!
Notes
- You can substitute water for the milk in this recipe if you didn't want the drink as rich.
- To make the pearls, I used my recipe for Instant Pot Tapioca Pearls.
- This brand of Tapioca Pearls is my absolute favorite.
- To make this drink hot, skip the ice and warm up the milk. Mix in the hot chocolate mix and pour over cooked pearls.
- Serve this drink immediately. Cooked pearls will harden when exposed to a cold drink, so if you want the pearls to have that chewy texture, enjoy it right after the drink is made!

Did you use a brown sugar syrup or no syrup or what did you use with the boba pearls and this drink?
I have them soaking in sugar water. But you can also do a brown sugar syrup if you want!
