This Matcha Mug Cake is ready in under 5 minutes, and uses only 6 ingredients. And most of the ingredients are pantry essentials. Except maybe the matcha. But then again, maybe you should be rethinking your pantry if matcha isn’t always stocked.
What you need to make Matcha Mug Cake
You are 6 ingredients away from making this mug cake! All you need is:
- flour
- matcha powder
- baking powder
- sugar
- milk
- oil
That’s it!
Variations & Substitutions
One of my favourite combinations is matcha and white chocolate. One variation that I love would be to add in chocolate chips to this mug cake to make it a little sweeter. This recipe as-is is not very sweet. So if you wanted something a little sweeter, adding some kind of chocolate chips, or frosting on top would work great!
As for substitutions, you can replace the matcha powder with hot chocolate mix if you wanted a hot chocolate mug cake. You could also substitute the milk for some dairy free milk to make this recipe vegan.

Matcha Mug Cake
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp matcha powder
- 1/4 tsp baking powder
- 1 Tbsp granulated sugar
- 3 Tbsp milk
- 1/2 Tbsp oil
Instructions
- In a microwave safe mug, whisk together all of the ingredients.
- Microwave on high for 1 minute, then remove to check to see if it's done. If not, continue to microwave in 30 second intervals.
